It’s here! The most magical time of the year! Stuck on gift ideas? Your favorite frozen fish company to the rescue. We’ve gathered up our top picks. Because it’s cold and snowy here in Boulder, CO (above is the view from our office), we’ve got a list of stuff that will take you to a beautiful day at the beach!
Four Fish by Paul Greenberg
Although Paul has written several really good books, this one is still our favorite. So beautifully written, you can almost smell the salty air. This book explores the sad state of the seas – our relationship with cod, tuna, sea bass, and salmon – all with a strong message of hope and excitement for the future of fish. Special bonus, LoveTheWild works with many of the fish farmers doing the pioneering work profiled in the book.
The Perfect Protein by Andy Sharpless
If you are a numbers dork like me, this is a fun book to read that makes a compelling case for why we should be eating more seafood for our own health and that of the ocean. Plus the holographic fish on the cover just looks cool. My favorite section is the beginning which lays out in clear data the true cost of our destructive traditional animal protein farming practices. While we don’t agree that wild fish is always the best choice, we are excited to show how good aquaculture is pushing the frontiers of sustainability and will solve many of the world’s food and environmental challenges.
Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard
While we have always been inspired by Patagonia, I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by this book and the honest and relatable account of founder life. Yvon is a certified bad ass, not afraid to make decisions with his intuition and the courage to move a market. Like Patagonia, we’re proud to be 1% for the Planet supporters, and see our business as an opportunity to change the world for the better.
Sex and the Sea by Marah Hardt
After a few raunchy jokes about the size of a whale’s penis, you won’t look at the ocean quite the same way again. This book is so much fun, you hardly realize that you are learning about how marine mating impacts global food security and how we can support better policies to protect our underwater friends from overfishing and other disruptions. Besides that, Marah Hardt is one of the coolest women in the next generation of ocean leaders, and we’re proud to have her leading this work right here in Boulder, CO.
Two If By Sea: Delicious Sustainable Seafood by Barton Seaver (a fellow Intrafish 40 under 40 recipient)
This one didn’t go to the beach with me, but looks like it’s been to the beach given the abuse it gets on my counter. Chock full of great recipes and step by step instructions with pictures, my favorite part is the short essays on sustainability and ingredients. Perfect if you want to be adventurous in the kitchen, and still feel good about it in the morning.
This is a bathing suit you can really love! Beside the cool designs, each suit is made from ECONYL® Fiber, a 100% regenerated Nylon comprised mainly of discarded fishing nets recovered from our oceans and old carpets. If that wasn’t awesome enough, 10% of profits are donated to help keep our oceans clean and save marine life.
Who doesn’t love a great pair of leggings? Besides being hot, every pair is made from 25 recycled plastic bottles and is Bluesign certified, which is a serious commitment to the environment and the people. They are so awesome, they are sold out until February… just right for Valentine’s Day!
Bureo Ocean Collection Sunglasses (fellow Fish 2.0 award winner)
We met the team from Bureo at Fish 2.0, but we were already fans! These guys take ghost nets, discarded fish nets that entangle wildlife, and upcycle them into great products. I pre-ordered my first pair of sunglasses on Kickstarter, but you don’t have to wait.
We love this ocean-inspired skin care line. My personal favorite is the Lather Rich Soap Bar for Hair & Body. Made with ethically harvested organic kombu seaweed and avocado butter, it goes anywhere, magically morphs from shampoo to shaving cream, and doesn’t irritate even my dry sensitive skin.
This eco-friendly blanket is just fun! When I’m not a the beach, I curl up in this blanket with a hot mug of tea and dream of being at the beach… maybe of being a mermaid too.
You’ll need a bag to carry all of your things to the beach and reusable Chico Bags are the perfect option. The amount of plastic debris in oceans, not to mention in landfills, is out of control. Chico Bag founder, Andy Keller, made it his mission to end single-use plastic bag habits and empower people to do the same. Not only are these bags good for the environment, they’re also sturdy, compact, and come in a huge variety of colors and styles.
Happy gift-giving from your friends at LoveTheWild!
